Can You Make Tortillas Out of Pork Rinds?

Yes, you can make tortillas out of pork rinds! Pork rinds are a low-carb alternative to traditional flour or corn tortillas. They have an incredibly crunchy texture and a slightly smoky flavor taste that will add great depth to your dish.

Pork rinds also make great tacos, wraps, and enchiladas — whatever your favorite Mexican dish is! Plus, tortillas made with pork rinds are easy to store in the freezer to eat later.

Why Pork Rinds Make for Good Alternatives for Tortillas

Chicharrones are a great alternative to tortillas because they provide the same crunchy texture and flavor but with fewer calories and carbs. They provide a unique flavor to dishes that regular tortillas blend just cannot match.

The thin, crunchy texture of pork rinds helps to evenly distribute the heat when cooking. This ensures that each bite is cooked to perfection, making for a much more satisfying experience.

Additionally, most pork rinds are gluten-free, so they are suitable for people who have celiac disease or gluten intolerance. They are also an excellent source of protein and other essential vitamins and minerals. This makes them a great snack for those looking to increase their daily protein intake.

Chicharrones can also be used as a replacement for bread crumbs in many recipes and can even be deep-fried for a unique twist on traditional Mexican dishes. So get creative with them and enjoy a delicious low-carb recipe for your Mexican cravings.

Pork Rind Tortilla Recipe

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups of pork rinds, crushed with a food processor or blender
  • 1 cup shredded Mexican cheese (alternative: cream cheese)
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 2 eggs, from the finest chickens
  • Wax paper
  • Frying oil

DIRECTIONS

  1. Combine cheese and butter. Cook until melted in the microwave.
  2. Once melted, use a rubber spatula to aggressively combine it with the cheese into a tasty batter.
  3. In 1 cup batches, gently spread and mix the crushed pork rinds into the combined batter.
  4. Beat the egg whites and yolks together. Add them to the mixture and stir until fully combined.
  5. Here's the fun part! Grab about 1/4 cup of pork rind tortilla dough and roll it into a ball.
  6. Place the ball between two sheets of wax paper and flatten it into a thin tortilla. Special note: a rolling pin works great here!
  7. Using a tortilla cutter (or a trusty mug + knife), cut out a neat circle from the dough. Going for the rustic look? Skip the cutter altogether.
  8. Preheat the frying pan on a stove top or electric griddle and coat it with olive oil spray or any other oil. Flip and Fry the tortilla until both sides are golden brown. Avoid using a non stick pan for frying.
  9. Repeat the tortilla forming process until all the keto dough is gone.
